The Future is Here

In 2018, at the first Symposium for Builds Bio+, Nancy J Kelley talked about disruptive new technologies that were transforming both the life science and healthcare industries fusing biology, engineering, design and manufacturing. These changes were described as a Fourth Industrial Revolution characterized by a fusion of technologies that were blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological realms, opening up new markets for biological innovation in agriculture, chemicals, bioremediation, energy, advanced materials, fashion and direct to consumer healthcare. Today, that future is here.

Biofabricate

NYC Launched/Based Companies

Spawned by the early efforts of nonprofit organizations in New York City such as Biofabricate, Biodesign Challenge, and New Harvest, amongst others, a plethora of NYC launched/based companies are harnessing nature’s design principles and manufacturing capabilities, such as C16 Biosciences, which is producing a sustainable alternative to palm oil, Tomtex, which creates “vegan leather” by using seashells and mushroom waste, Fork & Good, which is pioneering a new way of raising and producing meat, and Keel Labs, which uses algae to create yarn.

Biodesign Challenge

Explore This Emerging Sector

We spent the day exploring this emerging sector of life sciences beginning with the early organizations that worked to establish the industry and highlighting many of the exciting new companies bringing new products and services to market. We learnt how the lab needs of these companies substantially differ from traditional life science companies developing therapeutics.
