The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) is a new building embedded within St Thomas’ campus dedicated to bringing together King’s research excellence, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s leading clinical practice and the medtech sector’s commercial innovation power and talent, engaging multinationals, SMEs and start-ups simultaneously. The close collaboration will ensure that research in healthcare engineering is translated rapidly into new products and technologies that will benefit patients.
Following the sold-out reception at Savills in 2024, the Founding Members of London/UK Builds Bio+ hosted an exclusive networking reception at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering. The event brought together key academic and governmental leaders to explore the vision for building scientific bridges and research collaborations between London and New York, fostering deeper relationships between academic institutions, researchers, and life science companies.
Attendees gained insights into frameworks for collaboration and funding models—discussing how cross-border partnerships between industry and universities can be structured, potential funding mechanisms to support transatlantic research, and the feasibility of launching a joint accelerator programme backed by Builds Bio+ to support London/New York life science startup growth.
This event served as a dynamic platform for high-level networking and idea exchange within the London/UK life science and Builds Bio+ communities, uniting key stakeholders and decision-makers.

Distinguished Speakers and Cross-Sector Engagement:
The program featured a stellar lineup of speakers from King’s College London, University College London, Imperial College London, Bart’s Life Sciences, Galileo Labs, and Nancy J Kelley + Associates. Together, they addressed a full house on the importance of strengthening relationships between life science and healthcare clusters across the Atlantic to drive global health innovation.
NYC’s Life Science Momentum:
Nancy J Kelley provided an inspiring overview of New York City’s life sciences growth, highlighting $1.1 billion in total investment, 12 active incubators and accelerators, 3.5 million square feet of life science space, and projections of over 1,000 R&D-stage companies and 40,000 new jobs in the coming decade.
Call for Global Healthcare Transformation:
Sir Robert Lechler addressed the urgent need to reimagine healthcare systems in the face of rising health inequality and declining life expectancy. He advocated for a shift toward disease prevention, health promotion, and curative therapies for previously untreatable conditions.
Shared Vision for Cluster-Led Collaboration:
Speakers emphasized the crucial role life science clusters play in fostering partnerships between academia, healthcare, and industry. Both London and New York were recognized as uniquely positioned to lead in shaping the future of global health through these collaborations.
A Manifesto for Transatlantic Partnership:
The event concluded with a unified commitment to establish a formal partnership between London and New York, aiming to catalyze joint research, investment, and innovation through Builds Bio+ and its community of stakeholders.
Networking with a View:
Guests enjoyed networking and refreshments on a rooftop patio overlooking the Thames River and the Houses of Parliament, capping off the evening with a stunning celebration of international life science collaboration.
