In early March, New York suffered its first coronavirus death. A month later, that total exceeded 10,000. New York City was particularly hard hit, and lacked the testing capacity, personal protective equipment (PPE) and facilities need to care for the projected number of patients.

In the attempt to prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed, New York State and New York City reached out to private companies, other states and countries to obtain face masks, personal protective shields, surgical gowns and ventilators. Columbia engineers teamed up with clinicians at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York Presbyterian to design, prototype, scale up and manufacture thousands of face shields for health care workers in just a week, followed by orders and deliveries for 1.5 million + more. And NYC EDC partnered with local manufacturers and testing companies to create the capacity to perform 100,000 tests per week by the beginning of May and allow New York City to become self-sufficient in PPE. Facilities of every kind – ships, hotels, tents, a convention center and expanded hospital space – were evaluated, repurposed and pressed into service as makeshift hospital facilities.

Please join NYC Builds Bio+ for a timely conversation on how NYC Builds Bio+ members, academic institutions and policymakers across the life science and real estate industries stepped up to the challenge as paused commercial construction projects became emergency construction projects.
